Me

Right now, at 22 and freshly graduated from college, I really have no idea what I'm going to do with myself beyond the next year or so. The only thought I have is that I would like to write...something, anything, I guess. So this "blog" of mine here is mostly "writing practice".

So, to the subject of introducing myself. I was born in a small town in Kentucky in 1986 (coincidentally, the last year my Cardinals last won an NCAA championship...maybe they'll win another one when I die...). I had a mom, a dad, and two sisters. Those two sisters were quite a bit older than me. My oldest sister actually graduated high school the year I was born. So most of my younger years were spent essentially as an only child. That meant I was a little spoiled, I think.

Fast forward to my sophomore year of high school. My dad passed away that year. It wasn't sudden, but it was devastating. He died young. Not very young, but young. That has certainly had an effect on how I choose to live my life. The thought of leaving behind an "unfinished" life, of leaving my loved ones at such an inopportune time, it really saddens me.

My family and I get along OK for the most part. My older sister and her two kids live at home with us now, which is great, since it keeps my mom occupied, especially since I'm moving out in less than a month (hopefully permanently). And my younger sister is married with a daughter of her own as well, so she is doing great.

So...about me. I am a quiet, easy-going guy, but I like to think I have a good personality and generally get along with everybody I meet. I love sports (basketball and football mostly). In college basketball and football, I root for the University of Louisville Cardinals. In the NFL, I root for the Philadelphia Eagles, and in the NBA, I like the San Antonio Spurs. Kind of random I know, but that's how I roll. Sports is one of the things I plan to rant about regularly on this blog thingy (once again, assuming I actually keep with it).

Another subject will probably be video games. I love JRPGs, Sports games, FPS games, and Action/Adventure games. Some of my favorite games are probably the Half-Life series, the Zelda series, the Final Fantasy series, and the Grand Theft Auto series, just to give you an idea.

I also enjoy music, of course, although I doubt I will talk about that much here; it's not really I subject I find myself in a position to over-analyze. I just listen to what I like. I would describe my tastes as Hip-Hop, Indie, and Alternative Rock. My Last.fm page can be found here: http://www.last.fm/user/rilla12/ and lists my favorite artists as Radiohead, The Beatles, OutKast, Kanye West, and The Smashing Pumpkins, so there you go.

And movies. I really love movies. I'm happy to be out of college so I can spend less time studying and more time watching movies. I will really try to write about every movie I see here just because writing about movies (or video games, for that matter) professionally would be like a dream come true for me, and so I want lots of practice. Looking around my room, I have posters of the following movies on my wall: The Lord of the Rings, Fight Club, Requiem for a Dream, Reservoir Dogs, Army of Darkness, Kill, Back to the Future, The Usual Suspects, and Batman Begins. As you can see from that list, I'm a Tarantino fan (I can forgive the guy for Grindhouse, a few missteps must be allowed in every career). I guess I would just say that in addition to those movies, I love foreign films, particularly Asian, and particularly Japanese. And I want to see more classic movies, which I will do soon.

So other than all of that (which is plenty), I guess I would just like to say that I will be moving to Japan at the beginning of next month as part of the JET Programme. I've studied abroad there, and really enjoyed it, so I'm looking forward to this exciting adventure/exercise in humiliation. I will try to post at length on here about my endeavors in the Land of the Rising Sun, as well. Well, that was my introduction...until next time (maybe)!
